“Most of this year was spent producing “Ripe”, a 9’ tall carving in elm, whilst working at the Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop. Dutch elm disease took longer to reach Scotland so there are still a lot of elm trees, gradually being taken down to try & contain the disease. One benefit of this is that there is a lot of elm available to carve & I acquired a tree trunk to work on. I started from a small drawing. The work process involves an initial roughing out with a chainsaw, followed by an angle grinder with an arbortech attachment. I did some fine finishing with gouges, rasps & surform blades. The piece has a flat top, as I wanted it to be the central pillar in a building that I would subsequently build around it. It has been exhibited at the Edinburgh International Book Festival, Traquair House, & Dawyk Botanical Gardens.”
